Understand Focal Lenght

what is focal length? ~ For those who ade compact camera or DSLR .. try to look at the front or side of your lens .. I've taught a way I read the writing on the lens? is not writingabout like this..

18-55 mm or 18-135 mm or 50 mm or any number (usually on a DSLR)

OR

5.8-17.4 mm or 4.6-16.8 mm or any number (usually in compact cameras)

So what the numbers are this? the greater good? or the smaller the better? The answerall depends on their use .. possible range (range) a larger such as 18-200mm preferredfor some individuals and perhaps some other photographers who prefer to use a fixedfocal length (fixed) as 50mm. In short, everything depends on the use and naturephotography to be used.




Basically, I've categorized (roughly only) ni focal range as my schedule below:


Focal distance of 35mm format SLR

Super / Ultra Wide Angle (very large)	<20mm
Wide Angle (wide)	20-35mm
Normal (normal)	35-50mm
Telephoto (far)	70-300mm
Super / Ultra telephoto (so far)	>300mm
